Student Profile: Ash

Our 2023 Graduate Certificate in Strength & Conditioning students share their experiences and thoughts on the course.

This course gave Ash the chance to work with high performance sporting teams, particular women’s teams, to elevate his practice in training, strength and conditioning. The flexibility of the VU Block Model, and range of extracurricular experiences offered by Western Bulldogs allowed him to blend study with work and family commitments.

Q: Why did you choose Victoria University, and the chance to study in partnership with Western Bulldogs?

A: The combination of studying with a top university for Sport Science and the chance to gain experience and insight at an AFL club – where I want to work after I finish studying – is what led me to choosing this course.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the course and have found the experience with the Western Bulldogs to be invaluable. I would recommend the course to anyone interested in working in elite sport, particularly AFL.

Q: What is the best thing about Victoria University, the Western Bulldogs and your course?

A: The Western Bulldogs staff are very open, allowing me to see exactly what they do. They have also been very thorough answering any questions I have had. Learning from Des O’Sullivan (AFL Senior Strength & Conditioning coach) in particular has been a highlight, as he is very experienced and presents information in a very clear and concise way which makes things very easy to understand.  I have enjoyed the practical learning with VU – the hybrid course has given me the convenience of an online course with the benefits of learning face-to-face.

Q: Would you recommend Victoria University and the Western Bulldogs study experience?

A: Yes, I have really enjoyed the learning with Victoria University. The block model allows me to implement what I am learning professionally straight away, while the experience with the Western Bulldogs has allowed me to put what I am learning to practice in an elite environment.

I have a family with two young children, which can make the prospect of studying seem daunting, however the course with Victoria University has been quite flexible and the staff at the Western Bulldogs have been very accommodating – allowing me to gain experience when it suits me, and even at short notice.

Q: How did you find the extracurricular experiences, and how important were these in your success?

A: I really enjoyed the Shadow Shifts and Masterclass experiences. I was able to observe AFL training both on-field and in the gym, which allowed me to see how sessions are structured and how concepts are applied in an elite environment. The VFLW experience in particular allowed me to be hands on and assist with running the session. I found Gyan Wijekulasuriya (VFLW Head of Strength and Conditioning) really knowledgeable and accommodating. It was great to be involved with a women’s program as well, as I have had little prior experience.
