Our 2023 Graduate Certificate in Strength & Conditioning students share their experiences and thoughts on the course.
Kate returned to study while running a successful personal training business to elevate her knowledge of strength and conditioning principles. The 6-month course, with a mix of online and face-to-face learning was perfect to fit around her busy lifestyle.
Q: Why did you choose Victoria University, and the chance to study in partnership with Western Bulldogs?
A: I’ve been wanting to go back to university and finishes my studies, but all degrees go for at least 3-5 years. Being a business owner, I simply just don’t have the time, so when I saw the opportunity to study for six months and gain experience in the industry I was wanting to go down was perfect for me. Despite being a shorter time period, I had the opportunity to build real connections with course lecturers, Western Bulldogs staff and fellow students.
Q: Would you recommend Victoria University and the Western Bulldogs study experience?
A: Yes, it’s a great course for anyone wanting to pursue their career in strength and conditioning or elevate their knowledge of this specialization while working in an adjacent field.
Q: What was the highlights of the extracurricular experiences – Shadow Shifts and Masterclasses?
As part of the extracurricular experiences, being able to see how Des O’Sullivan (AFL Senior Strength & Conditioning Coach) trained the athletes while sharing his knowledge and experiences with the class was great. He always took the time to answer questions and gave insights on how he trains the athletes. I look forward to the Western Bulldogs expereinces as guest speakers allow us to participate.
In the AFL space I have met many staff from across the Physical Performance team, from rehabilitation to high performance coaches, and players took the time to make me feel welcome. I also had a great experience with Sean Potter (VFL Head of Physical Performance), sharing his knowledge, skills and experiences in the VFL program and industry. I really enjoyed going along to the VFL match game experience – I was able to meet Coaching staff, rehabilitation assistants and nutritionist as well. It was a great insight again and how it all goes behind the scenes. I hope one day I can get the opportunity to be a part of a team as a strength and conditioning coach.
Q: How did you find the VU Block Model and studying one subject at a time?
A: I like this way of learning – being a mature-age student, it was a great way to ease my way back into studying again. The VU Block Model is good for someone that might work full time or is returning to university again. Doing one subject at a time gets you to understand the unit more in depth.
I highly recommend this course to anyone looking to further their studies and to gain first hand experiences that the Western Bulldogs have to offer.
